CHALLENGE MET
Bridged shore and sea with a facility that met its audience’s appetite for first-class coastal dining
The Handy Boat marina that serves as the Dockside Grill’s waterfront home sits at the heart of Casco Bay. That prime position has made it the largest public anchorage north of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Zachau worked to completely rebuild and expand the marina’s popular eatery. The assignment called for a space fit for welcoming the crowds of weary mariners looking to refresh themselves on dry land. Engineering a waterfront restaurant for a working marina required the creation of a unique workflow supported by ingenious construction techniques. The resulting work plan incorporated a framework of concrete piers and grade beams to allow the grill to be built over the ocean that laps at its front door. The year-round restaurant now features the kind of 180-degree view its spectacular location deserves.
