CHALLENGE MET
Build a sustainable and energy-efficient home office for Hancock Lumber near their existing sawmill in Casco.
Established in 1848, Hancock Lumber is a sixth generation family-owned business operating a land company, a sawmill division, a network of retail lumberyards, and home design showrooms across Maine and New Hampshire. As their business has grown, they wanted to build a new, more efficient office building near their existing sawmill in Casco that incorporates their company history and culture, provides a modern working environment, and is sustainable and energy-efficient. The design for the two-story building includes a central open space on both floors with both private and open shared offices. Department members are located together to improve efficiency and communication. Breakout rooms and conference rooms allow opportunities for both collaboration and privacy. The upper floor has a large conference room with a fireplace and views to the sawmill across the road. The terrace off the breakroom has views to Hancock’s forest preserve outside and access to walking and running trails. The building has a mass timber frame and features wood products from the Hancock Lumber Company, including exterior siding, framing, interior wall and ceiling finishes, flooring, and handrails.
