CHALLENGE MET
Satisfied the technical and financial requirements demanded by a mix of historical and affordable-housing tax credits
Revitalizing a landmark building to serve the needs of an economically disadvantaged population was the perfect assignment for a firm with Zachau’s technical competencies and mission of community service. Renovation of the Huse School turned the World War II era institution into a 55,000 square foot facility featuring 55 affordable modern housing units. Much of the project’s $10.3 million budget was provided by a mix of tax credits secured by the building’s historical status as well as others earned as affordable housing tax credits from Maine State Housing. Details such as some of the school’s original doors and chalkboards were preserved to honor the heritage of the longstanding institution. Its location near the neighboring YMCA, local ball fields, and Bath’s Whiskeag Trail ensures that the building’s new residents will be within walking distance of the numerous amenities that complement their beautifully appointed new home.
