CHALLENGE MET
Created the functional flow and uplifting environment designed to nurture mentally and physically-challenged residents
Morrison Developmental Center is a private, non-profit agency specializing in the support of developmentally disabled children and adults. Zachau was delighted to build the new school that could serve this disadvantaged population’s needs. The facility’s construction was grounded by a central lobby surrounded by three separate wings. Each of these extensions was built as a segregated space to serve the school’s preschool, school-age, and adult residents. Distinctly different materials, internal and external building forms, and color schemes were used to help distinguish each sector in order to help the school’s cognitively challenged residents find their way with ease. Two state-of-the art greenhouses and the building’s brightly colored exterior were created to project the spirit of hope and positive growth this resource was custom-built to inspire.
