Transformed deteriorating low-income apartments into clean, modern units operating at dramatically-reduced annual costs

Dozens of downtown Westbrook families found a new pride of place after Zachau’s work to upgrade their affordable housing in Steeple Square. The three-season, $4.5M project covered simultaneous renovations to 73 units located in 16 separate buildings. The comprehensive project transformed every feature of residents’ homes. Extensive structural repairs were done to existing foundations while exterior upgrades were performed to install new siding, windows, and roofs. Mechanical and electrical system upgrades and ADA improvements were completed throughout the complex, with interior installations that included completely new kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, and paint. Installation of upgraded windows, insulated steel doors, high-efficiency boilers, and other sustainable features created a much quieter and cozier community for Steeple Square’s residents to enjoy.
