CHALLENGE MET
Satisfied the demanding restoration standards needed to earn certification on the National Register of Historic Places
During almost 50 years in business, Zachau has learned to appreciate the lasting value of Maine’s rich architectural heritage. Our work to renovate the Pennell Institute granted us a chance to keep a key part of that story alive. Past preservation experience served Zachau well in our efforts to update the towering Italianate-style brick structure. Techniques that brought the building back to life included masonry reconditioning and the installation of historically compatible windows, as well as other era-appropriate architectural motifs. Expert attention to those details led to maintenance of the building’s status on the National Register of Historic Places. Zachau’s care for old-world craftsmanship was complemented by construction of the modern interior spaces designed to work in harmony with a 140 year-old local landmark.
